Early Training: the First Four Months

“These two boys are from the same litter, boy on the left was paediatric neutered and the other has stayed intact. As you can see, the development the right pup has compared to the left is undeniable, from his skull width, to his chest and shoulders.
This is the development pups will lose out on when desexing before full maturity.”

Personal stories I've collected

Meet Five Crossings Chieftain or Chief as I call him.

He is 8 years old in these pictures. RIP 12-27-17 (12 years old)

Recent call for help from me....posted on my FB page....9-26-14

Have you ever needed a hero and at the last possible moment you have one?

So the dogs are barking even Chief who wasn't yet on duty. I went to check it out and there were two dogs on my perimeter. OH, the neighbor’s dogs (female pit and male lab pup) got out. No real danger. Again I hear more ruckus at the front of my home the neighbors dogs got my cat treed (I hope Annie is OK). I yelled at the dogs to go home as they left those two got into a fight. They never went home (600 ft away). I yelled ‘go home’ to the dogs again and the pit started to growl and walk towards me, diffidently showing aggression towards me. I couldn't turn my back even though my gate was only about 15 feet away. Each step backwards toward the gate the pit came closer. I didn't know what I was going to do. That pit had me it was just moments before I would be attacked.

didn't notice but Chief (my 9 year old LGD) had joined the commotion.…Chief was suddenly in front of me. I held his collar and tried to get behind my fence only 15 feet away, using Chief as a shield. Each few steps I took towards my gate the pit came closer snarling (Chief just let me maneuver him), as the pit got closer (about 2 foot away) it re focused its fight onto Chief… the pit attacked, I let Chief go and ran for the gate. Oh my injured knee running over the decorative rocks as I rushed to the gate. Remember the Anatolians are only aggressive enough to get the job done. I made it to the gate and safety. The dogs did a short fight and it was over. I ran into the house freaking out called city pound they referred me to the county pound that referred me to the police….so a chain of phone calls, meanwhile this whole time I’m trying to call the neighbor. Yup, I was a crazy woman. It got quite so I checked and the two offending dogs are back in their yard and finally the owner of those dogs answers the phone. He comes over and tells me his pit would never hurt anyone and to kick the pit out of here (He actually thought his dog no danger and I should kick at it.) Yes he advised me to kick at the pit. This my 3rd threat from this dog….but the most sever. I probably should have called the police but was getting tired of looking for help (I had been screaming for help earlier) and no one heard me. At this point I would really rather handle this with the neighbor.  But since the neighbor doesn't think his dog is a threat this is still an ongoing peril. That pit is not done yet….Cat looks OK and so does Chief although with long hair it is hard to really know. Chief had jumped a 5 foot chain link fence in order to protect me how wonderful is that? He is my hero!

According to Mark Wells:  Well I have to give kudos to my son Jeremy who is 13 yrs old. I had to come into work today and his mom is still not really able to do much so she is laying down ( I had to go into the office for a bit today for a major meeting) when someone knocked on the door. Jeremy opened the door ( We have a glass door which was locked plus the wood door that Jeremy opened) This guy asked Jeremy if he could come in and use the phone( Smart thought by the boy most people have cells now days) so Jeremy told him no the guy was persistent on wanting in so Jeremy told him no then the guy started arguing with my son so Jeremy did the one thing I told him to in that situation if I am not around he whistled for JD who quickly got the guy to leave when he jumped up on the locked glass door and showed him his teeth and started growling at him Jeremy said he had never heard JD sound like that it was extremely aggressive well needless to say the guy went on his way but was acting strange so Jeremy called the police (we live in a small town everyone including the police know who Jeremy and JD are so they came out they found the guy down the road a bit trying to break into a house and he had a gun on him. Needless to say JD is more than Jeremy's friend and companion his is Jeremy's protector. Needless to say I am on my way home now for the rest of the day and probably the week till mom is better.

This is from Wendy Reed

My 2 year old GP (Great Pyrenees), Yogi, just saved my horses life! I saw him chasing my horse around keeping him at a trot. He had never shown any interest in my horses before. I hurried and got dresses to go reprimand him. By the time I got outside, my horse was down and trying to roll. Yogi, was circling him and kept nipping at him. The horse got back up to chase Yogi! When he stopped, Yogi turned to chase him again. When I checked my horse, he had no gut sounds! He had colic!!! Yogi would not let him lay down and roll which could have killed him! I was able to get some butte in him and Yogi kept him moving for the next few hours. I did not need to do anything else. After several hours the horse started eating again and pooped meaning the crisis was over. Yogi is my hero!!!

How cool is this?  Sadie is my LGD Great Pyrenees/Anatolian in training. She's almost 9 mos. old. I had quit a struggle getting her trained to guard my poultry. Granted, she is my first LGD and I didn't know a lot. She's been doing well with them and the other animals for a while now. Just a little bit ago I was sitting in my car talking on the phone watching the pasture. Sadie was well I thought napping up top near the animals. I saw a big red tail hawk come soaring by less than five foot off the ground. The Hawk followed the fence line to the back of the pasture. Then across the tree line to the other fence. It then came directly up the fence line headed for the chickens. It came in low and slow. The next thing I knew Sadie lept into action and hit the hawk in mid air sending feathers flying. The Hawk took a tumble on the other side of the fence lept off the ground and flew as high and as fast as it could go. Good job Sadie!!!!! Lots of praises on that one.

smile emoticon so cool to actually see it.
